Great Foil Packet Recipes for Camping

When you are camping it is easy to make meals that cook fast inside a foil packet. You simply take TWO shaped layers of foil (rectangular shaped is best) and arrange the food you want to cook in a pile on top.  You then bring the two long sides of the foil together and fold it over the food.  Fold over three or more times and then crimp the remaining sides closed.  The more layers of foil between the food and the fire, the slower it will cook.  If you are planning to put the food in coal embers and NOT on a grill then use as much foil as possible.

Here are some great hearty Dude style ideas for foil packet cooking while camping.

There are endless variations as to what you can put in a foil packet.  A guaranteed success is Campfire Chicken Stew which is broiler chicken parts, cut-up potatoes, carrots, green peppers, undiluted condensed cream of mushroom soup, ¼ cup water, ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper.  Some people grill the chicken a bit before they put it in the foil so it is a bit crispy and then top it with vegetables and a glob of the soup.  It usually takes about twenty to twenty-five minutes until all of the chicken is steamed.

Easy desserts that can be made in a campfire are Banana Boats.  The foil packet serves as the bowl in which the banana dessert is served.

To make a Banana Boat you place each banana on a 12-inch square of foil and shape the foil around the banana so that they sit flat.  You then make alit in each banana about ½ inch deep to make a pocket.  You then fill the pocket you have made in the banana with chocolate chips, trail mix and miniature marshmallows.  You then grill the bananas until they are melted and golden brown and then let them cool down. The foil packet and banana serve as the dessert bowl.
