Remember the Vermont bed and breakfast that was featured on the Bob Newhart show in the 1970s? Vermont bed and breakfasts today are pretty much the same featuring vast homes with stone fireplaces and cozy views over blanket of snow or flower festooned meadows. As Vermont is largely an agricultural state, you can expect the friendliness and quaintness that often comes from a rural communities as well as restaurants and B & B’s that serve fresh healthy food straight from the farm. The reason a dude wants to stay in a bed and breakfast is because it is a lot cheaper than staying in a hotel in Vermont. It can also be a lot warming than camping in the wintertime which is exactly the season during which you want to be skiing and snowshoeing in this beautiful contry.
Many of the Vermont bed and breakfasts would have you treat their place like a second home. Many of them serve wine and cheese in the afternoon as well as the usual complimentary breakfast and some even serve a family style sit down dinner.. If you are a student and eating in cafeterias for a while then you know how important this is!
If you like architechture you will like the older little cities in Vermont. Many bed and breakfasts are also national treasures and many of them are hundreds of years old. A good example is the Hill Farm Inn near Arlington Vermont which has a guest house that dates from 1790 and the Greystone Bed and Breakfast in Hammondsville, Vermont that dates back to 1830 and used to be an old shoe factory. Many of the Vermont B&B’s are furnished with pieces that seem like they belong in a historical museum.
Yet another popular region of Vermont is Bellows Falls which is known for its many winter festivals, snowmobiling and ice fishing. You can sit out all day on the ice and drink your head off and party while fishing. Keep in mind that laws prohibit from operating any snowmobiles while you are ice fishing.
Another fun thing to do is go maple-sugaring only try tapping the trees yoursel fand then boiling the sap down to make your own home-made maple syrup. Bottle it yourself and give it away to your girlfriend or mom for Xmas. They will be amazed at the diligence and appreciate that you were capable of making such a homemade sweet gift.
