Famous Dogs Who Are Funny Dudes

The most famous funny dogs in history have been cartoons. Here are some of the most memorable dogs in the Funny Dogs Hall of Fame –

 

Reddy – Reddy was one of the very first of the funny dogs. He was a big white dog that starred in the very first cartoon made by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera called “Ruff and Reddy”. He had a red collar and was bossed around by a brainy cat named Ruff. Reddy first made his appearance on television in the fall of 1957 and the prelude to each episode featured the “straight-man” style dog posing dumb answers to questions posed by a live host named Jimmy Blaine.

 

Huckleberry Hound – “The Huckleberry Hound” was William Hanna and Joseph Barbera’s second television series starring a dog. This original funny dog was a dim witted good-natured hound with a Southern drawl that could never seem to hold down a job. In 1959, this show one an Emmy for technical excellence. Before then only Disney movies had won awards for animation.

 

Mr. Peabody – Mr. Peabody was the smart white dog with glasses that starred in “Mr. Peabody’s Improbable History” that was a cartoon series initiated in 1959. This was about a famous time traveling dog and his pet boy Sherman who he time traveled with in his Wayback machine.

 

Snoopy – Snoopy is one of the most famous of funny dogs. He is a beagle who was famous for being the pet of Charlie Brown in Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts” comic strip.  This playful yet droll pup and his crew also won and Emmy in 1964 for the show “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”  His main companion in the comic strip was a bird named Woodstock. He is also famous for his imitation of a World War I Flying Ace named the Red Baron.

 

Dino – A purple snorkasoraus, Dino was the pet of the Neolithic Fred Flintstone clan and was famous for running down his owner at the beginning of every show. Not only was Dino famous for his bark, which sounded like “rubba, rubba, rubba” Dino also talked in some episodes (sounding a lot like the comedian Phil Silvers.)

 

Underdog – This super dog with glasses and cape was a canine superhero. Underdog was a very popular character and his cartoon series ran straight from 1963 to 1973 during which children had the privilege of watching his alter ego  “the lovable shoeshine boy” turn into a force for good against evil. He was also famous for crashing into buildings while in mid-air.

 

Scooby Doo – The early seventies brought the big lanky dog with the weird lisp called Scooby Doo who was the star of “Scooby Doo Where Are You?” Scooby had a cute little “intellectual” type nephew named Scrappy and a not so bright country cousin called Scooby Dum.

 

Ren- Ren from the acclaimed irreverent series “Ren and Stimpy” is one of the most cult-like eccentric cartoon dogs of all time. This emaciated sharp-witted Chihuahua was companion to an overweight cat with dental problems and the two of them suffered many existential modern adventures together in their mid-nineties television series.
